Karma Chameleon

It's Friday, November 15, 1991.

Mercifully I do not have another dream, or as I like to call them "an omen of impending doom".

Maybe that means that today will be a good day.

I get up early, put some eye drops in my crusty conjunctivitis filled eyes (now both of them), put my glasses on that will make me look so hideous that no one will dare look at me, and then, cook myself a breakfast of Kellogg's Corn Flakes and chocolate milk.

I call it cooking because I heated up the chocolate milk in my convection oven/microwave before pouring it over my cereal.

I bag up my two remaining goldfish and take them with me to Wakakusa Chu Gakko (Wakakusa Junior High School) where I present them to the mentally-challenged classroom as a gift. I had purchased a few goldfish previously and given it to the class - and the kids all seem to like the fact that the goldfish I buy aren't the cheap common kind but are the gossamer, expensive kind. They gather around the aquarium and ohh and ahh as the fish swim around happily.

I don't get it. These fish never moved when they were in my aquarium. It's not like I am a rank amateur around goldfish and tropical fish. I've had both for over 20 years. in fact, I had one goldfish live for 14 years, growing from one-inch in length to well over 10-inches, simply by moving her into larger aquariums.

But these damn Japanese goldfish... they always seem depressed when they enter my apartment. Could my place be a nexus of depression? It would explain so much.

I wrote a pair of comic books on my goldfish experience that you are all welcome to read HERE and HERE AGAIN.

I hand out some more baseball cards to Omori-kun, one of the kids in this class who loves baseball. He bows deeply, smiles when he comes up and wipes his snotty nose on his sleeve. Thank god Japan bows rather than shakes hands when giving thanks.

In one of the regular classes, a Peruvian girl whose parents moved to Japan last year comes over and presents me with presents - Japanese language books for me to study. Bloody amazing.

See... this is what the world is supposed to be like. Pay it forward. You do something nice for the world and the world does something nice for you.

Karma.

It's a pity my Karma ran over my dogma months ago.

The headaches I've been getting from wearing my glasses (not as strong as they should be - but I'm either cheap or don't have the money to get new lenses - your choice) have diminished to a dull roar. Of course, perhaps the headaches were from me being hit by a car twice in a month last year. (Shut up! That's not the reason! Yes it is! No it isn't!)

During a break in the teaching (apparently I do do that every once in a while), I pull out an old wallet of mine, grab a pair of scissors and attempt to make an eye patch for myself.

Despite the conjunctovitus, I still have an irritating scratch on my eye. Yeah... the eye doctor mentioned that yesterday... I forgot to include it in the blog.

It's my goal to create a make-shift eye-patch until I can get a real one.  Tomura-sensei (the had English teacher here) is going to need some severe convincing if I'm to get him to let me go to the eye doctor and thus skip out of work or better yet get him to drive me there.

I'm not very convincing. Dammit! What's going on?! When I arrived here in Japan 16 months ago, people were falling all over themselves to do stuff for me - even stuff I didn't want them to do!

Now, it's like the Japanese are onto the lazy ass antics of North Americans! Everyone knows the Japanese never take time off when they are sick!  Dammitt! They are correct, of course, about North American shiftless behavior - just not this time!

Oh well, I suppose that despite my useless attempt at creating my own eye patch, I could just wait until next Monday when I visit Kaneda Kita Chu Gakko (Kaneda North Junior High School).  They have a school nurse.

I was going to ask the nurse here at Wakakusa, but she's been absent all week. Sick, I heard.

After school I ride over to the eye doctor and take a look at their eye patches. Pretty gay, boy. Seriously. The patches they have there are not very fashionable. If I'm going to wear an eyepatch, I'd rather look good than feel good.

Back home, Ashley comes over and helps me create an eye patch and then helps make the attachment out of a purple hairband she bought for me.

She says I look like a thug.

I then try on the eye-patch.

No wait, flip those previous two sentences.

A thug? Moi? Awesome! But a fashionable thug!

We watch some television. I try to drink a glass of Coke and pour it down my shirt. Damn lack of depth perception!

Matthew (who lives a few minutes away from me) comes over with a visiting Jeff Seaman (who is a California guy now living in Oyama-shi, I think) and the four of us go out for dinner. This is the first time all four of us have hung out since we first arrived here in Japan! Matt, Jeff and I were powering drinks down back then, oblivious to the permanently cute girl keeping up with us beside me. That's probably why I was surprised when she and I started making out at a dance club a few hours later.

Ahhh.... the good old days.

The four of us go to Matsuri for dinner and then to the 4C for drinks. Ash and I leave at midnight and head back to my place.

I don't expect any action tonight given how icky I look, and that is reinforced about 30 minutes later.

She and I were sitting around talking and I thought having a good time when all of a sudden she begins to cry.

I wonder what the hell I am saying that would make her cry?!

I guess we speak a different language from one another. It sounds the same but it means different things to men and women.

We soon make-up and go to bed. I have no idea what I am apologizing for, but it works.

Somewhere my dogma is rover and out,

Today's blog title is by Culture Club. I always hated this group, as I prefer my music a lot edgier, but what the heck, the title is apt.

Sh-Boom

It's Sunday, October 27, 1991 here in Ohtawara-shi, Tochigi-ken, Japan.
I'm sick. Yuck. I feel awful.
But I still sit down and write. I feel so much better when I write... whether it's a short story or a letter to another.
I know that when I write, it's always gratifying to receive a fan letter, have someone call me up and say they enjoyed my work or receive a letter in the mail from back home in Canada - it reminds me that I matter.
It sounds pathetic. But writers need gratification. It's to help them feel...
It's the same with me as a person with relationships.
I hate being taken for granted.
My ex-girlfriend Ashley said she hated for me to read her a story I was writing ahead of its publication. It used to tick me off (probably still does). A man should feel he has someone to talk to about ideas and things...
but here I am... sick, writing and no one calls!
What the heck is going on? I couldn't have pissed off everyone I like with my neediness? Ahh... maybe they are just out enjoying life in Japan.
Screw this... let me escape into the fantasy land of MarioWorld on my Nintendo Super Famicon (Nintendo Super Family Computer).
I play all day. No kidding. Besides... it's raining outside.
At 4PM, I eat a mushroom and crawl through a pipe and emerge back into the real world of Japan and phone Ashley.
She had fun on their hike in Nikko, despite only eight people going - one guy, Alan Broomhead.
To me - despite the high levels of chicks - it would have been a waste. I'm not going to screw any of them - at least not with Ashley about, and sometimes a guy needs to talk with other guys. I feel vindicated in not wanting to go not to mention being incredibly sick. That's so stupid, it's funny.
I go back to MarioWorld until it turns into tomorrow.

So... what's with this blog entry? I think it just shows you that people can appear happy go lucky on the outside, but can also be down on the inside. That was me in 1991. It's how I felt - despite living in Japan and having a good time. Sometimes a guy just needs more. I don't think that's wrong. What's wrong is not doing something about it.

Soon enough, oh reader, this country bumpkin from Toronto will do something about it.

Somewhere addicted - and it feels soooo good,
Andrew Joseph
PS: There's another short story in 8 hours time....

Don't It Make You Feel

It's a Saturday! Yay!

I'm sick. Boo!

It's October 26, 1991 here in Ohtawara-shi, Tochigi-ken, Japan... and I've just written a short story that scares the beejeezus out of me. And I have more inside me waiting to explode.

Sick or not, I drag myself up out of bed... clean up my apartment (it's not messy to anyone but myself.... but when I feel antsy, I clean...), then sit down and write out my scrambled thoughts which without fail come from a disjointed mind into a jointed story. It always freaks me out when I finish writing and read what I have written. It always surprises and amuses me. I love the process of creating and I love the creation even more.

I go out and rent some videos, come home and stare at my dying bonsai tree. It's a Japanese maple leaf tree that I have slaughtered from too much love in the form of watering. Oh well... sometimes things die. Then you go out and get a new one. It always makes me feel bad that I have killed anything... yet, writing a short story about me as a serial killer - well... I just got all of my angst out, and I feel great!

After writing out three different short stories, I feel better in my head, but my body tells me otherwise.

I get sick again...

Oh... and Ashley went hiking with Karen.

My ex and the woman would wants to be my future... ex.

Where the hell is Junko? I need her to come and look after me.

Oh... and I'll present one of those stories again in 8 hours time in a separate blog. Because I enjoy sharing. Everyone should share! Share my sickness... ayuh!

Somewhere sick, but my brain feels alive with wonderful words and thoughts,
Andrew Joseph

Carry On Wayward Son

How often have you been confused? Walked down a lonely path  not knowing which way to turn? When out of the mist of dreams comes a shining light - with a feminine form of a muse that makes you a free man? All the more important when your own name - or rather MY name, Andrew, means 'masculine'?

I'm not really asking you, oh gentle reader... I'm merely pondering the fates that has lead me down the dark, desert highway and yea as I walk through the valley of death, I shall fear no evil...

What the hell does all that mean? Someone knows, hopefully.

But when my alarm goes off at 7AM and I awake from a feverish dream, I re-set the alarm for 8:30AM.

It's Friday, October 25, 1991 here in Ohtawara-shi, Tochigi-ken, Japan... and I'm sick. I've been homesick, woman sick, and even drunk sick (once)... perverse sick a few times, too... but this is the first time I think I have a cold... or a flu... whichever one makes you feel bad.

I'm sick... and I am soooo not going in to work at the OBOE (Ohtawara Board of Eduication) office today. Don't get me wrong... I love being a junior high assistant English teacher on the JET (Japan Exchange & Teaching) Programme.. but not enough to even pretend I'm a spunky guy.

When the phone rings later, I crawl over and answer it. It's Hanazaki-san - my friend and boss at the OBOE. I tell him I'm sick and then ask him what time it is. He says 9:30AM. Damn! I must have set the real time rather than the alarm time...

I'm unsure why Matthew phones met at 1:30PM, but he did. To wake me up, I suppose... so I do. I get up and watch TV... he comes over with a Mosburger... I eat while we watch a video - and then perhaps satisfied that I'm not going to die, he leaves. I go back to bed and sleep... and dream.

I awake at 10PM - pretty feverish, but feeling okay enough to grab a pen and a paper and begin writing.

I write a short story. I actually have three more in my head... but the one I wrote... it's appearing about 8 hours after this particular blog. Just one word of advice to fellow writers out there... never do a serial killer story and write it in the first-person and use elements from your own life.

Obviously I'm not a serial killer or even a violent person, and despite being a man (IE sexist pig), I respect woman and would harm any man I know who would hurt a woman. Anyhow... over the next few days I wrote the three other stories... each was written in a completely different style and had characters that had no business being near each other. The story to appear next was written in the 1st person... one was written in the 2nd person like the book Bright Lights Big City (which I had just finished reading two days ago)... one was in the 3rd person... and the last one was written in something I call the 4th-person. I have no idea if it's a style or not, but we hear the story of a person not in the room... from two people having a conversation about them. I have no idea where that idea - or any of the ideas I write about come from.

Submitted for your (dis)approval in the next blog is the short story: The Killer In My Head. And just so you know... I decided to combine all four of the stories and turn it into a 20 chapter+ novella, and a month or so later, it was when I thought that I would like to become a writer some day. And tonight, in my fever... this is where it began.

Somewhere wondering WHY he called me at 1:30 on a work day and could come over,
